Adopt, Don’t Shop: A Call For Compassion
Promoting Pet Adoption & Animal Welfare With The Maharani Lakshmibai Foundation
India Is Home To An Estimated 62 Million Stray Animals, Many Of Whom Face Hunger, Illness, Abuse, And Neglect Every Single Day. In A Society That Often Overlooks The Voiceless, the “adopt, don’t shop” Campaign Stands As A Compassionate Call To Action—a Movement That Encourages Citizens To Open Their Hearts And Homes To Animals In Need Instead Of Purchasing Pets From Commercial Breeders.
At The Forefront Of This Humane Revolution Is The Maharani Lakshmibai Foundation (MLBF), A Women-led Ngo Championing Grassroots Change. Known For Its Work In Social Empowerment, Education, And Sustainability, The Foundation Has Now Extended Its Reach To Animal Welfare, With A Dedicated Initiative Focused On Pet Adoption, Stray Animal Care, And Vaccination Awareness.
Why “Adopt, Don’t Shop”?
Every Year, Thousands Of Dogs And Cats Are Abandoned Or Born On The Streets. Sadly, while Pedigreed Animals Are Being Bought And Sold In Breeding Markets—often In Inhumane Conditions—innocent Stray And Rescued Animals Are Left To Fend For Themselves. Adopting Not Only Saves Lives, It Challenges The Culture Of Commodifying Animals.
MLBF’s Campaign Promotes The Message That Compassion Is Stronger Than Breed Preferences. Each Adopted Stray Is A Life Given Dignity, Safety, And Love.
Health First: Free Vaccination & Sterilisation Drives
With The Support Of Local Veterinary Experts And Volunteers, MLBF regularly Organises Free Vaccination Drives, Sterilisation Camps, And Anti-rabies Clinics In Urban Slums And Rural Pockets.
Over 1,200 Stray Dogs And Cats Vaccinated In The Last Year
Monthly Sterilisation Drives To Control The Stray Population Humanely
Community Training On Animal First Aid, Disease Prevention, And Emergency Response
Vaccination Isn't Just An Animal Welfare Issue—it's A Public Health Priority. Rabies Still Claims Hundreds Of Lives In India Annually, And Prevention Begins With Informed Care And Active Outreach.
Street Care: Feeding & First Aid
Mlbf Volunteers, Many Of Them Local Women And Youth Leaders, Participate In Daily Feeding Drives For Strays. Simple Acts Like Providing Clean Water, Leftover Food, Or Shelter During Monsoons Have Become Part Of The Foundation’s Larger Goal To Build Empathy At The Grassroots.
Community Caregivers Are Also Trained To Administer Basic First Aid And Identify Injured Or Sick Animals Needing Vet Care. These “animal Sakhis” Are Living Examples Of How Inclusive Development Includes All Living Beings.
